Nail approximately 2" long, affixed and mounted on heavy stock archival paper; the photograph by L. A. Huffman measuring 7¾"x9½" is inside brown paper matting; all placed inside a 12"x13½" wooden frame.

An original nail from Lt. J. J. Crittenden's wooden marker at the Custer Battlefield of Little Big Horn. The nail was found next to Crittenden grave site amongst other nails and some animal bones. It is the style of nail that was used in 1876. It could have come from the original wooden marker or from the wooden box in which Lt. Crittenden’s remains were placed after his family had his remains put into the Custer Battlefield. The photograph is reproduced with dark lettering in the negative titled "Grave of Lt. Crittenden - Custer Battlefield - 1877." It was taken by L.A. Huffman, who replaced S. J. Morrow as post photographer in 1878 and opened his studio in Miles City, Montana, in 1880. Huffman is best known for his photographs of the Indians, cowboys, buffalo herds and the northern plains life.
