Letter written by Benton while serving his long tenure as he U.S. Senator from Missouri, where he championed expansion westward. He his perhaps best known today for being the father-in-law of John Charles Fremont. The letter, addressed to Mr. William Binke, P.M., Cincinnati, Ohio, seems to concern matters of shipping and trade: "...I had, from the first, taken the same view of this petty affair of the boxes, which you present, and that I shall continue to oppose the scheme to interfere with them in any way by the government. To dispense with fractions of a cent is also highly desirable in such numerous & minute accounts as the post offices present. Yours truly, Thomas H. Benton."
