xvi, 432 pp. With a large folding color lithographed map in the back. 8¾x5½, bound in full dark green morocco, ruled in gilt, decoratively stamped in gilt with two Indian Idols from Vancouver Island on the front and back covers, spine tooled and lettered in gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First Edition.

Presentation copy inscribed on the half-title, "To The Marquis of Lone(?). With, the Author's compliments, Bredenbury Court, Bromyard, June 16, 1884." Barneby traveled by train across the United States to San Francisco, with stops in Salt Lake City and Sacramento, then a side trip to Yosemite and down to Los Angeles before heading to the Northwest and Canada. The large, detailed map shows all but the southern portion of the western U.S., and much of western Canada, and indicates the major routes of the railroads (it has a white cloth tape-repaired tear). Lacks the folding lithograph plate.
