O.A. Brownson, a New Englander, preached for various religions before founding his own, later converting to Catholicism (shocking the readership of Brownson's Quarterly Review, which he published for nearly 30 years under various incarnations). The present work is described in DAB as "really a fantastic romance, he traced the spiritualistic phenomena of the day to Satanic influence."
