First issues of an important early California literary weekly, with contributions by the editor, Bret Harte. As is customary for the editor of a fledging literary review, Harte penned the very first article anonymously: "Neighborhoods I Have Moved From by a Hypochondriac". Mark Twain would write the following year that: "The 'Californian' circulates among the highest class of the community and is the best weekly literary paper in the United States - and I suppose I ought to know" (Letters, 25 Sept. 1865). Sold with two Vanity Fair cariacatures of Harte by "Spy".
