Manuscript claim to the Bed of the Tuolomne River, signed by William G. Hersey, President of the Morgan Bar Sluicing Company, written and attested by the company Secretary. 1 pg, 5x9¼, on lined blue paper, docketed the next day by S.C. Gunn, Recorder, on the verso .

Land claims pertaining to the Gold Rush are exceedingly scarce on the market. Hersey writes: "the Morgan Bar Sluicing Company...consisting of himself and eight others has this day made claim to the Bed of the River Tuolumne in front of Morgan Bar on said river, from the foot of the Race at the head of the said Bar, to the Kenyon at the foot of the same, for the purpose of sluicing as soon as the water will permit". The urgency of this claim is hinted at on the verso where the exact minute of filing is recorded (11:45am). Sluicing sediment for gold was a popular technique in this region.
