A scarce pamphlet on John Brown (1800–1859), an American abolitionist who was part of the Underground Railroad movement in the 1850’s, and leader of an antislavery band that received wide publicity. In October, 1859, Brown and his followers captured the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, but they were captured soon after by a company of U.S. marines, commanded by Col. Robert E. Lee. On December 2, 1859, Brown was hanged at Charles Town. His dignified conduct during his trial won him sympathy in the North and which led many to regard him as a martyr. The front wrapper cover title reads: "The Life, Trial and Execution of Capt. John Brown: Being a Full Account of the Attempted Insurrection at Harper's Ferry, VA," which differs from the title page with "Conviction" replaced with "Execution." Top 1¼" of the front wrapper cover cut off, but with the full title present. The original wrapper spine strip separated into 4 parts and affixed on the rear new end-leaf.
