184, + 8 ad pp. (8vo) 9¼x5¾, period half-vellum and marbled boards, spine gilt. First American Edition.

First American edition of one of Charlotte Brontë's most enduring novels. Brontë expanded the theme of her first novel, "The Professor", based on her experiences as a teacher in Brussels. Oddly, this copy with a typo in the publisher's imprint, "Franklim Square".

Condition:

2" tear from marbled paper on front cover, slight wear to corners; mild, mostly marginal foxing, last two ad leaves creased; overall an extremely good and attractive copy.
