With title-leaf & 59 double-page lithographed maps, hand-coloring in outline & wash. (folio)19½x13½, original green cloth lettered in gilt on front cover.
Significant Italian atlas with with some pertinent maps of America, including "Nuova California" from the Rockies to the Pacific, with the Gold Region designated, and an inset of the San Francisco-Monterey region (this is from the Hippolyte Ferry map of 1850, based in large part on the geography of Duflot du Mofras), plus the whole of the United States, Mexico (pre-Gadsen Purchase), etc. Also, the World, many European countries, Asia, a separate Japan, Australia, the Polar Regions, and many others. Each of the maps has extensive descriptive text at the sides and bottom, with statistical tables and other features. On the title-page is a mounted listing of the maps in this particular volume, but it does not correspond exactly to the maps in this atlas, there being additional battle plans of the Crimean War not listed, and no maps of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Asia Minor, and a few others - 63 maps are listed, only 59 present. However, this was a compiled atlas - with each containing different maps, not two are exactly alike.
Condition:
Staining and wear to the covers, hinges cracked through so text block detached as a unit; some light foxing, but most maps quite clean and generally near fine to fine.
