With 83 original photographs, with sizes ranging from 2"x3" to 7¾"x14," affixed to heavy card stock, presumably extracted from a bound album with white cloth tape still present, loosely gathered together.
Interesting original photographs during the Raj period, or British occupation, in India. Many of the images show various hunting party scenes, chiefly from Poona, with men wearing full hunting attires, riding on their horses, and with their hunting dogs. Some of the photographs have the names identified in ink on the card stock margins, including a hunting scene with Lord Lamington, who was the Governor of Bombay in 1904 and became the “Grand Masters of All Scottish Freemasonry” in India. The inked initials “A.W.S.” and “R.A.S.” constantly appear (possibly their family photos); other names mentioned include: Major Cleveland, Major Elliott, Col. Channer, Col. Henderson, Col. Bull, Agaloschick Shah, Capt. Hopwood, Cecil Gray, and Major Chesney. The other images show social settings scenes (including one titled “Children’s Fancy Dress Party given by Poona Bachelors”), family group photos, views of the land, houses, Hindu temples, a horse drawn carriage, an Indian infantry unit directed by English officers, etc. Many of the photographs were taken in the town of Poona (now Pune), about 100km south-east of Bombay (now Mumbai). One photograph of a man riding a horse is signed “Sunny Jim.” Some of the photos are lettered in the negative, including, "Poona Hunt, 1903" and "The Hunt, Poona, 1904".
Condition:
