Chi Pai-shih (1861-1951) was a celebrated Chinese painter, given a retrospective at the de Young in 1960. The curator, Alice Boney, wrote "[Chi's] life was a dedicated one, a ceaseless struggle to capture for himself and the world in the simplest, truest terms the beauty and inner spirit of all that lived and grew about him..." The prints in the present volume are beautifully executed and reflect that ideal.
