Sheilah Graham's own, annotated copy of the account of her love affair with F. Scott Fitzgerald, which had been co-written with Gerold Frank and with which she was largely unsatisfied. From a rather depressing and forlorn childhood, partly spent in an orphanage, Graham reinvented herself as a British aristocrat to the extent of being presented at Buckingham Palace at the age of 19. When F. Scott Fitzgerald met her in 1937 he had recently moved to Hollywood and was trying to escape his debt, alcoholism, and the great tragedy of his marriage to Zelda. Graham was a gossip columnist. In the 1990's her son, Robert Westbrook, would himself revise the account of their affair in "Intimate Lies", using this copy of "Beloved Infidel" as a starting point. He writes in the prologue: "I began with my mother's battered copy of Beloved Infidel which I discovered among her belongings...I had not read Beloved Infidel since I was thirteen and in my mother's copy I immediately came upon unexpected gold: At some time in her life she had gone through and annotated her story, writing scrawled notes in the margins as to what was true and what was not. In some cases she provided the dialogue she and Scott had spoken to one another; in other places there were only cryptic comments..." In all, there are about 20 notes sprinkled throughout the latter half of the book as well as various underlinings. To give a few examples, next to the printing of Fitzgerald's poem, "Beloved Infidel", Graham has written, "when he died I was shattered / I had nothing / whatever he had grafted on me he took with him" (p.195); in the margins of an account of Fitzgerald's abusive behavior, "DRUNK he despised all beggars. He would not have done this to Zelda. Her family was better than his. He was a dreadful snob" (p.299) and after he sends a telegram disclosing her humble origins, "Dreadful. How could I forgive him?" (p.300). Many of the other notes correct factual errors or provide further details. Included in this lot is a First Edition of Westbrook’s book and a letter signed by him concerning his discovery of this copy. A unique volume, documenting a love affair which has attained mythic status in literary and Hollywood history.
