Author’s fourth book and his first collection of short stories with the appearance of “An Outpost of Progress,” a tale of the Congo written before “Heart of Darkness.” The American edition preceded the British edition by roughly ten days. Cagle states that approximately 1250 copies of this edition were printed, including those in the “b” state binding (with no top edge gilt), while Smith and Wise estimate only 3000 copies were printed.
