Newspaper significant for its coverage of the dispute between Texas and New Mexico following the annexation of the latter territory from Mexico. Texas, a slave state, claimed all lands east of the Rio Grande, which would have included Santa Fe and other areas which were part of New Mexico under Mexico rule, but occupying forces were turned away by Federal troops at Santa Fe, to the consternation of Governor Bell of Texas. Millard Fillmore's address to Congress regarding the matter is transcribed, as is a letter from the Secretary of State to the Texas governor, and a speech by Senator Thomas Hart Benton arguing against "ceding seventy thousand square miles of New Mexico to Texas."
