Highly decorative double-hemisphere map of the world, with California shown as an island, and with other significant features. There are insets of the northern and southern hemispheres, and the map is surrounded by etched illustrations. These latter are noted by Shirley as being nearly identical to those adorning Frederick De Wit's 1668 "fine maritime map" of the world, "in the corners are large and lively scenes, allegorically representing the four elements. Fire is shown by war and destruction; air by the heavens; earth by harvesting and husbandry; and water by ships and a spouting whale..." This is the second edition of Danckerts' world map. The first edition, issued around 1680, was nearly identical to the De Wit map. This second edition has an altered southern hemisphere inset, showing all the southern continents as far as the equator, whereas previously only the southernmost tip of South America was depicted; the names have been added to the oceans; New Guinea is drawn as an island; and the coast of North America beyond California has been added.
