3-page autograph manuscript, in pencil on rectos only of lined paper, 12x8. With many changes in word choice, and underlining for emphasis.

Wonderful manuscript, titled by Hearst "Publicity" in which he gives pointed instructions and a pep talk for publicizing "photoplays", divided in three sections headed "Pictures", "Text", and "Editing". Begins: "Pictures are more important than text. Give thought to getting good pictures. Make the text short-two hundred to three hundred words", continuing, "If we will carefully plan and skillfully make new and good pictures, beautiful and artistic pictures we can get an immense amount of publicity." His instructions on text are equally matter-of-fact: "Be sure you have something to say before you start to write. Then say it pointedly and paragraphically. Don't weary your readers with long articles or long sentences or dreary commonplaces. Above all dont tell the story of the photoplay. That is the laziest and worst form of publicity..." Probably relates to Hearst's efforts to promote the films of Marion Davies.
