Autograph note in ink and some pencil, written on the verso and slightly overlapping the recto of a luncheon menu card for 17 May 1936. 1¼pp., 8¼x5.

Hearst gives his frank opinion on the Republican candidates in the 1936 Presidential primary; casting about for whom he thinks would be most likely to beat Roosevelt. He gives a capsule opinion of some candidates: Wadsworth ("would be regarded as a reactionary"), Fuller ("a conservative but not an objectionable kind"), Vandenburg ("a pretty good speaker, but not a judicious one"), et al. Hearst finally settles on [Senator William Edgar] Borah: "I think Borah would be the best. I asked Mr Block to make this suggestion to the Governor. Of course the old guard would object, but they would have took the ticket anyway. Borah would bring votes to the ticket which might otherwise go to Roosevelt." Hearst's support of Borah is interesting given that Hearst papers once published forged papers condemning Borah as accepting a $500,000 bribe from the Mexican government.
