Draft editorial, appears to be written in response to a letter. Hearst questions American policy in WWII, suggesting that America is spreading its forces too thin in Europe while the Japanese campaign against the Aleutians had just begun. Begins, "As a matter of fact this columnist does hesitate to criticize the American conduct of the war. In the first place there is natural unwillingness to create dissension of any kind among our people in the face of the present great and critical emergency....Still it might be well for the public to ask the question of its government whether it is strategic for America to scatter its forces thinly and more or less ineffectively over all the world and whether it is wise to send so many of our forces and so much of our supplies abroad when they may soon be sorely needed for the defense of our own country..." Hearst compares the quality of dissent in America to that in Britain. He further complains that: "To us has fallen the job therefore of protecting the British possessions in America and in the Pacific. Must we also defend England? And must we not also defend America?"
