Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) born in Pöchlarn, Bohemia, is considered one of the great early masters of modern Expressionist art. His paintings revealed a remarkable psychological depth and vision. After being expelled from the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts for his shocking Expressionistic ideas, Kokoschka worked as a designer and illustrator and painted a famous series of portraits, mainly of actors and writers. During WWI, he was severely wounded and settled in Dresden to teach at the Dresden Academy. After many years of travel, Kokoschka returned to Vienna where he was persecuted by the Nazis. Kokoschka believed that "for the creative man the problem is, first, to identify and define what darkens man's intellect; secondly, to set the mind free." He also wrote a number of plays, including the controversial “Murder Hope of Women.”
