Portrait of Yvonne Patterson, the noted ballerina who was an original member of George Balanchine's American Ballet, the forerunner of the New York City Ballet. She performed principal roles with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, American Ballet Caravan, the Marquis de Cuevas' Ballet International, the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo, and DeBasil's Ballet Russe. After her performing career, she staged and taught ballet all over the world. Imogen Cunningham, whose career in photography lasted some three quarters of a century before her death in 1976, became an almost legendary figure, and was close friends with Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Willard Van Dyke and other San Francisco Bay Area photographers. Dancers were among her favorite subjects, and her photographs of Martha Graham among her most enduring images. Provenance: Recently purchased directly from Yvonne Patterson.
