To live means to fight, - the bigger, the more all-embracing the fight, the bigger & finer the life. We've both shared it. Fraternally, Alexander Berkman, May 18, 1914, New York." Alexander Berkman (1870-19), the son of a wealthy Jewish businessman, immigrated to the United States at the age of 18, where he eventually met and lived with fellow Russian-anarchist Emma Goldman. Berkman and Goldman were influenced by the anarchist writings of Johann Most and both became involved in the movement to free the convicted men of the Chicago Haymarket Bombing of 1886. In 1892, Berkman was convicted of an attempted murder on Henry Clay Frick, a wealthy industrialist. He served 14 years in prison, of which these memoirs are based. In 1917 he and Goldman were convicted of violating the Espionage Act, and both were later deported back to Russia after serving two years in prison. Includes two related clipped articles, laid in; one from a 9-page short biography on Emma Goldman and a 4-page periodical clipping.
