General Loring was a one-armed veteran of the Mexican War, nicknamed "Old Blizzards" and notoriously argumentative with his superiors. After a dispute with Stonewall Jackson, he was given command of Southwestern Virginia. He revived the press at the Kanawa Valley Star for Army use. The citizenry in his command were mostly of Confederate sympathy, and his issued this broadside as an encouragement to peace. He declares clemency towards those who have chosen to remain at home in the War or taken forced oaths of loyalty to the Union. This lot also includes a second, later printing of the broadside. This is thought to be a facsimile issued about 1900, though Herman Matheny, the previous owner makes a bibliographic case for its being a later issue.
