Pershing, in the middle and surrounded by a large crowd (over 100 finely dressed men all staring back at the camera for this shot) assembled at the Elks Lodge in New York City, in honor of this important Four-Star U.S. General (with a large four-star banner high on the wall in the background, plus several American flags draped on the upper walls), dated September 9, 1919; taped on the verso to black paper matting (14¾x26" overall).

Lettered in the negative "Elks Welcome to General Pershing, Home of No. 1 N.Y. Sept. 9, 1919." Gen. John J. ("Black Jack") Pershing (1860-1948), who eventually rose to the highest rank ever held in the United States military, equivalent only to the posthumous rank of George Washington: General of the Armies. During World War I, President Wilson named Pershing commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, and who's successes during the war, helped earn him the title: "the most celebrated American leader of the war." Pershing never ran for President, who as a Republican, had too many close ties to the policies of the Democratic Party and President Wilson (a Democrat).
