A 4-line poem, signed by Mary Howitt, written on her Esher estate letterhead. Poem reads: "The grows tired of counting / jewelled lull I ring; / Music, whom none listens, / Is a weary thing. Mary Howitt, August 24th, 1968." 6-7/8x4½".

Mary, and her husband William Howitt, collaborated throughout their long literary careers, with The Forest Minstrels and other Poems (1821) being their first of many joint works. In the 1830's, they moved to Esher, England, and became good friends with fellow author (and literary giant), Elizabeth Gaskell.
