[3], [37 (map plates)], [2], 72 (text) pp. With 37 hand-colored copper-engraved maps; pictorial copper-engraved title page and frontispiece. (Oblong 24mo) 4¼x5¾, bound in full contemporary maroon sheep, decoratively tooled in gilt.
Charming little miniature atlas, with a double-hemisphere map of the world, a planisphere of the heavens, maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The map titled "America" shows both North and South America with the northern portion in a somewhat unfinished stage, since this area was still largely unexplored, and has California named (which is only colored in outline). Also, the various countries and regions of Europe, including the British Isles, Spain, France, Italy, Germanic countries, Russia, Hungary, Poland, etc. Though likely not original, the coloring appears contemporary.
Condition:
Spine and extremities rubbed, gilt tooling flaked; lacks free endpapers, occasional faint and tiny dark spots, else maps clean and attractive; near fine overall.
