[12], 224 pp. First Edition. 1872 [1871]. Each with frontispiece and wood-engraved illustrations after John Tenniel. 7x4½, uniformly boung in full red morocco gilt-tooled with vignettes of the characters on front covers and spines, all edges gilt, single cloth slipcase; bound by Bayntun-Riviere.

Handsomely bound set of Alice first editions. The first volume is the first published edition - the illustrator John Tenniel was deeply dissatisfied with the printing of the illustrations and convinced Carroll to suppress the book at his own expense. Only about 20 copies of this 1865 Macmillan first issue survive, most in institutional collections. Rather than discard the remaining sheets they were sold to D. Appleton in New York and 1000 new title pages were printed and tipped in. Tenniel agreed that the illustrations would be passable for an American audience. The book was then reprinted, in acceptable fashion, and published in England. The present copy has the inverted "S" on the last line of the Contents page, thought to be an early issue point. Through the Looking-Glass is the first issue, with "wade" on page 21; the present copy has the original cover cloth bound in at rear.
