Cosmographicus liber

Apianus, Petrus

Place Published:

Antwerp

Publisher:

Joannes Grapheus for Arnold Birckmann

Date Published:

Feb. 1533

Description:

LXVI leaves. Woodcut illustrations, those on C1v, C4v, and H4r with volvelles and separately printed woodcut nocturnal components on O3r.

Bound with: STOEFFLER, JOHANN. Cosmographicae aliquot descriptiones. Marburg: Eucarius Cervicornus, June 1537. [20] leaves. Woodcut architectural border on title-page; woodcut device. 5 folding woodcut plates. First Edition. Together, 2 volumes in 1. (4to) 8x6, early pasteboard binding. Bookplate of Oswald Seilern.
Two rare works of 16th century cosmography. Stoeffler (1452-1531) and Apianus (1495-1552) were both mathematicians important for their technical contributions to astronomical measurement. Stoeffler's work contains five folding woodcut plates although Adams calls only for four.

Condition:

Minor wear to binding. First work: Lacking volvelle on O1r and manubrium cut on O3r supplied in facsimile; a little browning, pale dampstain at ends. Second work: Some dampstain, E4 torn with some loss to errata; folding plates with some browning, laid down, small losses at folds. Overall, very good.
