309, [1] pp. Illustrated with 8 full-page wood engravings, including frontispiece, plus other wood engravings within the text. 7x4¾, original orange cloth, stamped and lettered in black.

Originally published in 1873. Graff calls this work a "revolting fictitious story written to advertise Dr. Clark Johnson's Indian blood syrup, and made up mainly of descriptions of Indian life and customs, some of which are cribbed with considerable garbling from Catlin." Nonetheless, a popular tale in its time, influential in creating the frontier myths which have entered into our collective conciousness. See Graff 1199; Rader 1265.
