xi, 415 pp. Illustrated with Artotype plates from photographs (mostly by E. Bierstadt), including frontispiece portrait of Cyrus Field with his facsimile autograph and tissue-guard; plus engraved figure drawings within the text. 8¾x6¼, original olive green cloth, decoratively lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. First Edition.

Inscribed presentation copy, signed by the author to "Cyrus H[all] McCormick with the warm regards of Henry M. Field, October 20th, 1893" on the front preliminary leaf. Interesting association since Cyrus Hall McCormick is the son of the inventor of the Reaper and Henry Field is the son of Cyrus Field, who (with the assistance of Professor Morse) created the Atlantic Telegraph system. Plus, accompanied by a 1-page, 12 line autograph letter signed by Cyrus W. Field to New York Governor John Hoffman regarding attending the funeral service for Morse (co-creator of the Atlantic Telegraph), dated April 4, 1872, tipped-in on a stub before the frontispiece. Additionally, author's clipped signature, tipped-in at the back. Also, has a long pencil notation on the front flyleaf by noted collector Adrian H. Joline: “This book which was given to me by Isabelle F. Judson, the daughter of Cyrus W. Field…” and continues conveying the inscription associations and the tipped-in letter, etc. Great associations of famous names relating to early and important innovations in American history. Bookplate of Cyrus Hall McCormick on the front pastedown.
