Stunning set in original boards, with charts and several plates hand-colored, and a rare, handsome edition. Also with interesting early provenance. Each volume bears a gift inscription, "London, February 10th 1790. The Gift of J.P. Braddock to R.P. Braddock on board the Discovery." There is a letter from the London Public Record Office attesting that Robert Braddock was entered on the Books of the H.M.S. Discovery on 5 February 1790, five days before the date of this presentation. He was aged 19 years and was discharged from the Discovery on 12 July 1790. Cook's second vessel on his final voyage was the Discovery. However, Braddock’s ship was more likely the sixth so-christened H.M.S. Discovery, which sailed with Vancouver on his great voyage to the Northwest Coast. Vancouver himself was a 19-year old crewman on board Cook’s Discovery. Braddock may have enlisted for the Pacific, but this voyage was delayed many months due to the Nootka Sound crisis. This set has nearly identical pagination to that described by Forbes, but has several further plates and the large folding general chart. In addition to the account of Cook’s Voyages, there are also the narratives of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson, and several others. Forbes 96.
Condition:
Ordinary minor soiling and wear to original boards, a little chipping and unobtrusive glue repair to spines; some front covers with early, faded inscriptions; internally very fresh and clean with just some offsetting, some plates bound with captions trimmed, one plate loose and laid in, few closed stub tears to folding charts; well-margined, excellent impressions of the plates and overall fine.
