Copper-engraved map, hand-colored plus a hand-colored cartouche. Engraved by P. Pickard. 51.2x60 cm. (20x23½"). Second state.

Fine and beautiful world map, criss-crossed by directional lines and showing California as an island with indented northern coast and several coastal place names, including "P. St. Franc. Draco" and "P. de Monte Re". The Anian Strait directly to the north. There is an incompletely drawn "Staten Land" far to the southwest. The directional lines and the omission of all interior detail make this more of a seafarer's map; it was prepared by the mathematician Claes Jansz. Vooght for van Keulen in 1682. There are three small sailing ships in the southern seas. This is the second issue, with "Met Priviligie" line within the title cartouche, as illustrated in Shirley. Shirley 512.
