Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline including two inset polar maps, and hand-colored ships, sea monsters and three hand-colored border panels with 16 vignettes. 41x54.7 cm. (16x21½").

One of the most beautiful and sought-after of Dutch maps of the Americas. Only slight indication is given of the Great Lakes, California is peninsular, and there is a very large lake in New Mexico around which are scattered the seven cities of Cibola. Seven sailing ships grace the ocean, pursued by three sea monsters. "Geographically the map is identical to that of Hondius, with the notable exception of a new and more correct depiction of Tierra del Fuego, and the islands discovered by le Maire and Schouten in the Pacific" (Burden). The Northwest Coast includes definitive place names north of 40 degrees. The East Coast is rich with Indian names. The polar insets derive from Blaeu, as do the town views on the top border, including scenes of Poeiock village in Carolina, views of Carolina and S. Augustin. This is the third state, with top right corner chip to the plate (in all but one known copy), without lower border panel. Burden 207.
