Significant and quite scarce map of the coast of California as discovered and charted by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602. A Basque working for the Spanish, he traded between Mexico and the east, and in the course of that made some exploration of the California coastline. Spurred on by the explorations of Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish commissioned Vizcaino to lead an expedition up the Pacific coast from Cape San Lucas at the tip of Baja California to Cape Blanco in present Oregon, to find stopover ports form the Manila to Acapulco ships. The data from this voyage was used for the next 200 years, and many of his placenames still exist. The present map shows the coast from Cape San Lucas to Cape Mendocino in California, and has a plethora of placenames along the coast. The Vizcaino voyage was one of the prime contributors to the geographic misconception of California being an island. Scholars believe that Father Ascension proclaimed the insular configuration in 1620, primarily based on the northeast turn of the coast above Cape Mendocino as depicted on this map based on his explorations. Though not a direct product of the voyage, this map was included, undoubtedly for comparison purposes, in the Atlas del Viage de las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana al reconocimiento del Estracho de Juan de Fuca in 1792, which accompanied the Relacion del viage..., the record of an important voyage up the Pacific coast, and the last to be undertaken by Spain. This is the fourth map in the atlas, with Numo. 4 engraved above the title.
