Rare map of the Americas, one of the very few Spanish printed maps of America, first published in the 1601 first edition of Herrera's Historia General; the present map appeared in the 1622 edition (there were intervening editions, but these were not illustrated with maps). A completely new copperplate for the map was made for the 1622 edition. It can be identified by slightly different dimensions, and the presence of the title in the upper left rather than upper right corner of the map. Burden remarks that "On this map the most noticable feature used is the distinctive narrow Florida peninsula. The lack of any great detail still reflects the official policy of protecting Spanish knowledge of the New World; despite this the outline of the map is accurate. The only name to appear in North America is la florida." Additionally, a sliver of the tip of Baja California is present at the extreme left. Burden 141.
