Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline. 20.4x27.6 cm. (8x10¾").

Charming little map of North America at the end of the 17th century, with California shown as an island "with indented northern coast and no place names, but labeled Isle de Californie. Unnamed peninsula to north on mainland." To the north is Terre Arctique et Nouveau Danmarck. Although dated 1693, the map was apparently not issued until 1697 in de Fer's Petit et Nouveau Atlas, then re-issued in 1705 and 1723. McLaughlin 111.
