With two ink presentation inscriptions signed by Thomas Carlyle in the first volume: On the recto of what appears to the the original front free endpaper (placed before the title when rebound), "To Mrs. Welsh from her affectionate T. Carlyle, London, 25 April, 1840"; and on the verso of the leaf, "To Mrs. Dr. Russell, gratefully, T. Carlyle, Templand (?), 7 March, 1842." Affixed to the leaf preceding the inscriptions is a newsclipping discussing letters from Carlyle to Dr. and Mrs Russell. With the bookplates of Guilielmi Ringland and Thomas Fleming, Jr., in Vol. I.
