The very rare first edition in German of Caesar's Commentaries. There are numerous errors in foliation, including vi and cvii-cxix repeated in the numbering. This copy lacks all but an 8x3½" fragment of the title-page (Fol. I), containing a portion of the woodcut, being the horse's posterier; also lacks the final leaf containing the colophon, and numerous other leaves delineated below. Despite the flaws, it is an extremely important early edition, and complete copies are virtually unobtainable. The only two copies of the 1507 edition in U.S. Libraries, at Harvard and Stanford, are both incomplete, and the only one copy of the 1508 edition, at Brown University, is complete, the other two copies (at Duke and Temple) are incomplete. Employed as the endpapers of the present copy are leaves from an early German work, possibly the Nuremberg Chronicle - these are defaced.
