First printing with Scribner's seal on the copyright page and unbroken type on pp. 36 and 248. The jacket with a small portion of the woman's lower lips battered; the first state jacket must be completely unbattered. Bruccoli states that the jackets do show “progressive batter.” Overall, a superb and clean copy with the gilt lettering on spine intact. Bruccoli A13.I.a.
