Accounts of these two important voyages undertaken by the Columbia, commanded by Robert Gray, sent by Boston merchants to participate in the lucrative fur trade. During the first voyage, it is estimated Gray took 200 sea otter skins worth $18,000; he then sailed to China, sold the skins, bought tea, and made his way back to Boston, becoming the first to carry the American flag around the globe.
