Franchere's work (first published in Montreal in 1820) was "the first printed account in book form of John Jacob Astor's scheme for a fur trading company with headquarters at the mouth of the Columbia, and the first printed account of the overland journey back from Oregon to the east through Canada" (Streeter 3691).
