An early example of the use of photography in book illustration and perhaps the first use of photographs taken of artwork commissioned for that purpose. Photographs include studio shots of seven landscapes depicting the pastoral scenes of Horace's own life painted by Felix Joseph Barrias (1822-1907) for this work. These are mounted on pages printed with a framed border and captions on 3 sides of the image. Other photographs serve as headpieces. With the armorial bookplate of Alfred de Curzon to front pastedown. Curzon (1831-1916), the 4th Baron Scarsdale, was the father of George Curzon, Viceroy of India, 1899-1905.
