Lovely set of Shakespeare's Works in splendid condition, the magnum opus of the Ernst Ludwig Press. The press was founded by Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse, in 1907 and was directed by the brothers Friedrich Wilhelm and Christian Heinrich Kleukens. Roderick Cave described the press as "the first truly private German press of the period," and the splendid, restrained typographic design was praised by D.B. Updike and Colin Franklin. The present work was dedicated to the memory of C.J. Cobden-Sanderson, in appreciation of the Doves Press German edition of Faust.
