The first of Dryden's great satires, an allegory based on 2 Sam. 13-9 dealing with certain aspects of the Exclusion crisis, notably the intrigues of the Earl of Shaftesbury and the ambition of the Duke of Monmouth to replace James Duke of York as Charles II's heir. The various public figure are represented under biblical names, and in this copy there are a number of contemporary ink names in the margins telling exactly whom is being referred to. With some, but not all of the misprints in Signature C corrected: on page 5, line 10 'And serv'd' for 'As serv'd,' and on line 4, page 6, 'cuold,' (for 'could') have not been corrected; 'Kold,' 'Kody' and 'Patron's' in lines 8, 12, and 34, of page 6 (for 'Bold,' 'Body' and 'Patriott's') have been corrected in ink; the catchword is 'Not' instead of 'Oh' has not been corrected.
