With envelope addressed and signed by Dickens laid in: "J.P. Harling Esquire/ Upper Gower Street/ Bedford Square - Charles Dickens," with one pence stamp. A portion of the back of the envelope is missing. Dickens dedicated the work to J.P. Harling, who acted the lead in 1836. This is the scarce first printing in Germany of Dickens' Village Coquettes, published in London in 1836. The spine lettering on the (apparently) later binding reads: "R. C B. 1845 DICRENS [sic] VILLAGE COQUETTES."
