One of the more controversial figures of the 19th century, Brown was among the first abolitionists to advocate and practice insurrection as a means to the abolition of slavery. His raid on the Federal Armory at Harper's Ferry in an attempt to arm slaves led to his conviction and execution by hanging in December, 1859.
