"This travel volume includes a brief mention of California (pp. 217-226). Brodie left Pitcairn's Island on April 13, 1850, aboard the barque Colonist bound for San Francisco. He arrived in the city on May 18 in what he describes as a 'horrid sink of iniquity.' He mentioned that nearly 100 New Zealanders were in San Francisco and that he achieved some attention by sharing his manuscript on Pitcairn's Island. He also visited Sacramento, New York, Benicia, Stockton, and San Jose. After surviving an attack of cholera, he left San Francisco on November 12 in the steamer Antelope bound for Panama and, while crossing the Isthmus, wrote of California's impact on the area." (Kurutz 78b) Brodie includes a list of subscribers, (some of whom were buying copies to be given to Pitcairn residents) as well as a chart of all the ships that had called on the island since 1808.
