Log of three voyages of the clipper ship 'Florence'. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th voyages of this China clipper. The Florence was a "medium clipper ship built by Samuel Hall, at East Boston, to the order of J. and R. Forbes of Boston, and their old and esteemed friend and employee, Capt. Philip Dumaresq; launched Feb. 23, 1856." (Howe and Matthews, American Clipper Ships). The Manuscript is in the handwriting of Dumaresq and opens with his careful notes on ballasting and loading his new ship, and on port events in Shanghai. He primarily records, in detail, his sail handling and navigation. The present log begins with the voyage from Shanghai to New York (return log of her first voyage), Dec. 17, 1856 - March 22, 1857; and continues with voyages from New York to Hong Kong, April 28 - Aug. 2, 1857; Hong Kong to Shanghai, Aug. 10-23, 1857; Shanghai to New York, Dec. 2, 1857 - March 17, 1858. Florence was later transferred to English, then Norwegian ownership, and was lost at sea in 1888.
