xvi, 261, [3] blank pp. + 39 leaves bearing 39 engraved plates on rectos only. (8vo) 7¼x4¾, original brown cloth embossed with a moiré ribbed pattern, spine gilt lettered. Third Edition.

Originally published in 1851 with a Second Edition in 1862. This edition contains a seven-page addendum on "Service of a 15-inch gun mounted on a centre-pintle iron carriage" that was apparently accidentally omitted from the previous edition. The new edition seems to have been issued hastily, for the added chapter is not listed in the Table of Contents and the spine of the volume is still dated 1862. The excellent plates were engraved by D. McClelland (of the Topographical Engineers) after sketches by Lieutenant R. H. Rush of the 2nd Artillery Battalion. Scarce in all editions.
