De Witt Clinton's copy, signed by him on the title-page. James Thomson Callender (1758-1803) is described by Thomas Jefferson's biographer Dumas Malone as "the most unscrupulous of the Republican pamphleteers and the most notorious scandalmonger of the era." A refugee from Great Britain, he made a name for himself in the United States in 1796 with his publication of the facts of the scandalous connection between Alexander Hamilton and Maria & James Reynolds. The present book continues the assaults on Hamilton, mixed with effusive praise for Jefferson; and Jefferson set himself up for later embarrassment when he indirectly provided financial assistance to Callender. When President Jefferson rejected his pleas for aid in 1801, Callender turned on him and in 1802 published the rumors about Jefferson and Sally Hemings. De Witt Clinton (1769-1828), future Mayor of New York City, Governor of New York, and major booster of the Erie Canal, was in the late 1790's secretary to his uncle George Clinton (1739-1812), twice Governor of New York and eventual Vice-President under Jefferson & James Madison.
