Robert Dinwiddie (1693-1770) was appointed surveyor-general for the southern part of America in 1738, in the same year he visited Barbados and uncovered many frauds in the collection of revenues due the Crown. This appointment as Inspector General was apparently made in response to the discovery of these frauds. With the embossed seal of the Commissioner of Customs and signed by T[homas] Fairfax, J. Evelyn, R. Corbet and one other. A rare and important West Indies item.
